13. Spring Residence

This project is based in Kununurra in the East Kimberley, a town of 7000 people that calls itself “the last frontier”. The existing house is a 1960’s asbestos worker’s cottage that has survived the intense heat, hungry termites and monsoon rains to form the basis of a new tropical lifestyle home with views out to the red rock of the hidden valley escarpment.

The addition includes a new kitchen, pantry, laundry, bathroom, breezeway and master bedroom that radiates out from the existing building - and a big outdoor living deck. It is important to provide a space for outdoor living as an alternative to the airconditioning when the heat becomes oppressive. The old and the new roof meet in a central gutter that forms a waterfall at both ends, falling into a rock filled pond during the monsoon season. The shower and kitchen have louvre windows directed toward the waterfalls, and celebrate the cool change, excitement and explosion of life that the monsoon brings.
