09. Purnululu Cabins
East Kimberley Tours began in 1982, leading swag tours over a rough track into a little known area of the Kimberley known as the “Bungle Bungles”. Forty years on it has become the world heritage listed Purnululu National Park, and many thousands of tourists come to see the amazing geological formations every year.
The Purnululu Range is set in a vast open savannah, and yet East Kimberley Tours operates from a camp with a tiny footprint several kilometres away from the range to ensure minimal impact on the landscape. This means that the safari cabins are arranged in close proximity to one another, and must achieve a high level of privacy between them. The effect is one of a small village joined by a network of paths, and the cabins are designed to be compact and unobtrusive in the landscape. For many years East Kimberley Tours had canvas tents, but this time they wanted to create sustainable cabin accommodation that retains the safari feel while withstanding the harsh semi-arid climate of Purnululu.
