04. Kimberleyland Waterfront Cabins

These Cabins are sited on the shore of Lily Creek Lagoon and are designed to raise the bar for waterfront accommodation in Kununurra. The Lagoon is a Ramsar-listed wetland well known for it’s lightning displays, spectacular sunsets and abundant wildlife.

Our first design conversations were about safari tents, and throughout the design process we continued to talk about the cabin design as being “out of the ordinary”; a Kimberley adventure; a kind of luxury camping experience.

The cabins needed to be compact both in floor plan and site layout. This constraint was seen as an opportunity to connect with the spaciousness and wide open vista of Lily Creek Lagoon, and bring those vibrant colours inside the room through the large window frontage of each cabin. At the same time there was a need to maintain a sense of privacy from the neighbouring cabins, and the roof eaves are designed to be low, almost tent-like in order to enhance the feeling of privacy.

A deck to the front of the cabin allows guests to relax outside and be less reliant on air-conditioning; and embrace the climate and landscape. A swing seat and BBQ nook allow the deck to feel spacious while remaining compact.
